That scheme alone sets “Uncorked” apart from the typical “wine movie,” admittedly in short supply already. The story - someone pursues an unusual profession to the chagrin of their family - is familiar. Laughter and tears aren’t mutually exclusive in life, nor are they here, as the story of a young man pursuing his passion for wine rather than take over his father’s barbecue restaurant threads the needle of being believable, emotionally engaging, and fulfilling. He's definitely in the Barry Jenkins, Ava DúVernay & Issa Rae Club. The idea that certain things are deemed inaccessible to or not “for” those of lower- or middle-class backgrounds is handled delicately, and one of the best things about Penny’s script. Though Elijah’s mother Sylvia (Niecy Nash) supports her son no matter what, Louis takes Elijah’s disinterest personally, as he and most of Elijah’s extended family perceive the world of wine as something snobby and removed from them. The film has some nice notes (no pun intended), and offers refreshing breaks from stereotypical ways in which black families are typically presented in film. At the end of the movie I really had a feeling of satisfaction with how real it was. Flavoursome enough without being especially nourishing, this will still be enjoyed by many out there looking for some sentimental sweetness in dark times. In his good-natured feature debut “Uncorked,” writer/director Prentice Penny (“Insecure,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”) sets out to challenge and change these optics, braiding a formulaic father-and-son tale with a gifted African-American sommelier-to-be’s pursuit of his advanced palate. There are no featured audience reviews for Uncorked at this time. Where writer-director Prentice Penny fails, however, is on the directing side. The acting is unforced and the performers appealing. The ultimate message of the film is to follow your passions, but Penny recognizes the compromises and sacrifices that are necessary, as well as the experiences that might be missed by choosing one path over another. And for Louis, that pride resides in familial legacy and love. A fresh perspective with a dose of originality. Their push-and-pull dynamic ranges from gentle ribbing to outright arguments, sometimes in the same scene, and that changing shape, reflective of how difficult such differences can be to manage in real life, makes it less frustrating that Uncorked ends on a note of uncertainty. It will go down easy. Gradually, it becomes clear that Penny is more interested in what unites the two (they are both meticulous in their professions, for instance) rather than what sets them apart, forging the way to a conclusion of genuine, mutual acceptance, without abandoning the challenges they face even in a post-Obama world that many falsely consider to be post-racial. Uncorked is a surprisingly delightful and original film that explores the niche topic of winery expertise, and still finds a way to tell a heartfelt story of family and dreams. Like a good wine, once you let Uncorked breathe, its heartfelt tenderness will yield a sweet time. This movie was a true inspiration...so glad it ended with life's true meaning...Faith. This film could have been so much better and more interesting (actually a very good story!) The film isn’t without its flaws, but they’re all forgivable in light of how well it hits the feel-good bullseye. It’s ultimately not that informative about wine nor barbecue (though perhaps enlightening for those who had no idea that Master Sommeliers exist), but wine is the pretext that Penny uses to tell a compelling, believable family story.
That's not to say that it wasn't a good movie because it was I could just see that being the one critique of the film. Hope. For Elijah, that pride seems to be split evenly between his career obsession and parental respect, evident both when he strolls through the streets of Paris—a course-mandated excursion he embarks upon, thanks to his caring family’s generous backing—and when he works at his dad’s BBQ restaurant. Uncorked, now on Netflix, made me laugh out loud three or four times. By creating an account, you agree to the Privacy Policy Despite his father's wishes for him to carry on the family restaurant business of smoked ribs and soul food, the main protagonist, Elijah (Mamoudou Athie), decides to enter the world of wine, preparing to become a sommelier.
Sadly, his efforts don’t always land—one labored, rushed-through plotline involving cancer especially drags down the film’s energy while failing to sell some bare-minimum teary emotions. It's the kind of movie anyone can easily curl up with, without too much thought. | Top Critics (15) I really loved Courtney B Vance and Neicy Nash's chemistry on screen.
