i want more of ya

It’s lazy. So yes great list , Yes! Recently I was diagnosed with OCD, and since then I have really been wanting to read more books with OCD rep in them.

I’m about to start my fifth month of blogging, so I’m still relatively new to this whole blogging thing. loved this post <3, YES TO ALL OF THIS!!! I want to see fantasy books where mental illness plays a bigger role. I hope your writing goes well. Especially when there’s other things to consider, like privilege, race, class, co-morbid neurodiveristies, etc. For some reason, ‘preppy’ girls and ‘geeky’ girls have been pitted against each other in fiction. Look, it’s hard being disabled but it’s also hard having someone you love going through ruinously difficult times. Change ). They’re looking for someone who’d be a good prom date, not a good father. THESE. !” someone rants in a review. having a reader go through an entire book where they can relate to the main character, and still walk away not knowing what to do with that information is so far from ideal. One book that I’d recommend checking out is written by Rachel Lynn Solomon, a Jewish YA 2018 debut author.

It’s one thing to be inclusive, another to be in the head of a disabled character and act like you know how it feels — if you haven’t lived it.

I tend not to like dystopians. I was just talking to Kay Kerr yesterday about which stereotypes we are subtly encouraged to hide, even as own voices writers. By using it, a book can easily become obsolete. Let them be interesting and unexpected. The number of Young Adult titles published more than doubled in the decade between 2002 and 2012 — over 10,000 YA books came out in 2012 versus about 4,700 in 2002. I have been left with cravings here and a void that needs filling! I think if we could see more of these types of books, mental health rep would be fantastic—I especially love your idea of fantasy with mental health issues explored and giving the character with mental health a plot! PLEASE DON’T DO THIS.

I will be the first person to admit that the books I read with disability representation are few and far between. I’m not sure if I’m phrasing it correct, but… I want to have MCs and sidecharacters who are religious, poc, vegan, mentally ill, suffer with a disability etc. When you said Knight with OCD, I didn’t know I needed that until you said it. I also chose Girl Power and humble origin Adrienne!!!! There is a neon sign pointing to Sam’s autism, but I didn’t use the word and I think many people won’t know. Books DO exist that cover these things. Save the sarcasm for one character. @ Paper Fury 42 Comments.

There are so many excellent YA books dealing with mental healths, but…there are also holes. But we desperately just need good autism rep to start with it’s rare. But the more people triumph diversity, the more rep we can call for and the more rep we can get.

But not all teens are adorable, wise-cracking, defiant, sarcastic little squirts. Stereotypes. Find your yodel. So, I think we are on the same page, ;-). It’s definitely more common to see a disabled side character instead of a main character. Thanks! Pin this image! I was surprised too, but only because I bought it on a whim + hadn’t seen reviews on it yet!! “You have anxiety?

It makes me want more of you Also, they’re 16. WHO IS THE MAGICAL PERSON. We need more books like that . It’s actually sort of sexist to pit girls together like that...It’s not a competition.
➸ What It’s Like To Write An #Ownvoices Novel. It’s not always written for shock value.

It’s not an excuse though. I would also love more books about characters who are not “conventionally” beautiful, like Molly from The Upside of Unrequited, as well as LGBT characters . Books with great supporting parents that are actually there for their kids are rare!! Sure, some of my classmates will end up marrying their current boyfriend/girlfriend but most will breakup before or during college. Especially that we need more #ownvoices books! I hate ‘perfect’ endings to YA novels. I’d love to see more YA books featuring black Muslim characters. This is probably my biggest pet peeve with some YA novels. (Have you read History Is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera? I love this trope so much because it teaches us to never give up. Thanks for mentioning that book about dissociation – I’ll definitely look up How it Feels to Float – that’s a condition I feel is totally under-represented and when it does come into a story is usually completely misrepresented (like in Split, Fight Club, and the like). Mistakes are always possible, but so are apologies and learning to do better!

I can definitely see how an adventurous YA plotline could be inspired by this. Thank you for your kind comment. And don’t be sorry for the comment! Yes yes yes to all of the above!

I think that book is fantastic, and part of what made that book so unique and special was that it was own voices. The Gay Young Adult Novel You've Been Waiting For Is Finally Here, 9 Great Young Adult Novels For Politically Engaged Readers. Unless you abandoned someone in a group project. We definitely need more friendships in YA and close sibling relationships. Then the an author can pull the “actually I never said they had bipolar” card and deny bad rep. We support each other.

Hi!

I have no clue how you created all these graphics but – WOW!!!

(And I always go by the rule: if it’s #ownvoices, then they write their identities however they like.). That’s always a worry for sure!! More diversity would be a very good thing. We have been HERE, dysfunctional and internally screaming, since forever.

Thanks girl! Another trope or feature I love is meet cutes – who doesn’t love an accidentally sweet meeting?? It all sounds amazing, and like they’re completely rich. I honestly think lasting relationships are built on friendship and these relationships are way more believable and romantic to me!

Like, issue books are important and I will never minimise it…but for sure I just want to see disabled and neurodiverse kids on adventures, queer and POC being heroes, and mentally ill characters living their best lives they can. It’s helpful when it can be! to change??? Or the Main Character has the sibling with cancer. (And this is unfortunately not the first time I’ve come across this trope.). But also out with the autistic kid ending the book hugging everyone. I wish they were on our shelves. And I'll thank the Lord for the love that we've shared The problem with rep that relies on stereotypes is that it feels ingenuine because it skips the details. The reviews are harsh sometimes – things no one would say about an abled straight white male writer or character.

We believe in each other. Today is National Voter Registration Day! I am surrounded by teenagers five days of the week of over 75% of the year. Read More…, Copyright © 2020  Paper Fury  ·|·  C.G. Let me just say, this is NOT because I think YA isn’t real literature. That is true on a basic level. Required fields are marked *.

But YA fiction often only gives us one type of beauty. I only dabble. Oh I see.

Here’s the thing about most marginalisations: they’re seen as undesirable and shameful. Thank you for commenting and sharing your thoughts! Executive dysfunction.

Also, more good queer rep in SFF would be brilliant. Bryson Keller was so WHOLESOME and I hate that I was so surprised. Let’s say the average ‘writing a book and publishing it’ process takes about two years.
as i’ve been reading more and more books with mental illness representation, i’ve definitely noticed that there’s still a lot missing there. Even though YA is definitely my genre, I see what you’re saying! From the moment you wake me up

Some amazing friendships are formed from this trope! The teenage main character finds out a huge secret about the enemy fairy army / corrupt government / mysterious murder / sketchy biology teacher. I know some people get tired of seeing an all powerful female lead conquer all with little issues but I think we need more of that! You wouldn’t write about what it is to have a stab wound (which authors famously look up all the time) without actually researching it. I’ve got a ton more on my TBR that I really need to prioritize, so thank you for reminding me to do that! especially the long distance friendships, since i have a lot of those myself! Thanks for sharing, Cait! yes oh my gosh can they just??? Than I've ever been Which is wrong?! But accurate and respectfully. I’m excited but nervous to be writing this post because I do not know everything and I’m learning everyday to be a better ally as well as advocate. Everything that you do

And then, just like that, they get to lead the resistance/investigation because obviously, they know what’s going on. , Agreed. And don’t tell teens they’re a burden. By the way – your blog looks AMAZING!!!!! Knights with OCD. No.

She’s gifted (not a savant though), and for that I’ve been criticised. It’s just…we don’t seem to talk about disabilities in that as well? Although if I’m truthful instead of just gently dragging myself — I’ve just been busy this month. This is an awesome tag. And you’re totally right in that it can help make others more understanding. I want to see the authors push a little more in terms of what’s discussed int heir books. Darius the Great Is Not Okay is an example I love for this. I think that a lot of times when there’s a therapist, they’re either new or the main character hates them. I kind of want to see this in books more?? The point is there’s so many identities and yet most stories we get are so narrow and yeah usually written by straight/white/abled men tbh. I want to see more inter-religious relationships in YA. Hah, and you said you were a newbie. Autistics don’t need to be savants to be worthwhile.

Labels: discussion, diversity, heroines, self-esteem issues, virginity. I also feel so hard for authors who do bare their souls on page and write about their experiences. .

Deaf romances. makes me so sad when they lose friends due to having a breakdown (although I know it’s realistic!!) Where is the rep?? , ➸ YA Anxiety Book Recommendations

Most often: It’s the carer’s POV.

I definitely agree that more on page diagnoses would be great, though I can see where this might be difficult in fantasy where the characters might not have a specific word for their illness. And I still have privileges of course, one of which being i’m white. But it would be nice if more could hint that just because it’s the end of the story doesn’t mean it’s the end for the main character’s adventures.
