The term refers to the process in which the federal government must release migrant families, mostly from Central America, apprehended at the U.S.-Mexico border into the interior of the United States to begin the process of seeking asylum. The thousands of families waiting to seek asylum at the border also include a surging number of Mexican migrants who are fleeing cartel violence in their home states. Except for some humanitarian and medical exceptions, McAleenan says immigrants who cannot successfully claim their lives would be in danger would be sent back to their home countries. But the Justice Department says as many as 75% have kept their assigned court date. The Homeland Security Department has not responded to a request for comment. Within 45 days, the Departments of Homeland Security, Defense, Justice, and Health and Human Services will submit a report outlining past and ongoing efforts to end “catch and release.” Another report will be submitted within 75 days detailing what additional resources or authorities are needed to finally and fully achieve this goal.
